This Year Women Ruled the VMA’s, but the Guys were Good Too

By having over 200 million records sold, eight studio albums to her name and 14 number one singles in just a little over a decade Rihanna became this year’s recipient of the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award at the Video Music Awards.

While she may not have beat out Michael Jackson in records sales (around 600 million), she did beat him out this year in the amount of number one hits she has (his is 13).

The Barbadian hitmaker opened the show to a slew of her biggest pop songs dancing in a bubble gum cutout outfit and killing it on the dance floor.  This was only the first of four medleys she had throughout the night.

Hyperactive comedy duo Key and Peele spent the show commentating on the presenters, winners and performers while trying to create meme-worthy catchphrases of the night’s most momentous occasions. Some of their jokes were spot on, the rest were simply flat and repetitive sexual innuendos.

The most anticipated act of the night was none other than Britney Spears. Nine years passed since her lackluster performance in 2007, in which she looked more like a deer in the headlights instead of a pop princess. On stage, she had a steamy musical number with rapper G-Eazy of her hit “Make Me,” which was a definite return to form for the singer-dancer. Later they both performed one of his hits, “Me, Myself and I” to a cheering crowd.

Presenter Alicia Keys highlighted that it was the anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” speech and later gave a stirring poem, in which she said “that all women and men are created equal,” before she announced the nominees for Best Male Video.

Calvin Harris won for “This is What You Came For,” which was co-written by his former beau, Taylor Swift, who he definitely did not thank.

Kanye West was Kanye West as he made non-sequiturs about his music idols, his love for his wife and his feud with Taylor Swift, in which he addressed his controversial music video “Famous.”

It was an expression of our now, our fame right now, us on the inside of the TV. The audacity to put Anna Wintour next to Donald Trump. I put Ray J in it, bro. This is fame bro. I see you Amber…my wife is a [gangsta], not a lot of people’s wives would let them say that.

West later referenced the high level of crime in his native Chicago, shouted out Chance the Rapper and finally introduced his “Flashdance” inspired video “Fade.”

Not to be outdone, Beyonce took the stage for almost 20 minutes as she did an angelic rendition of “Pray You Catch Me,” which she followed up with a racy “Hold Up” where she smashed the camera with a baseball bat and topped it all off with an Olympic-like synchronized “Formation” dance that is worthy of a gold medal. She was later presented the Video of the Year Award by four of the Final Five od the USA women’s gymnastic team.

Jimmy Fallon shocked the audience by dressing up as Ryan Lochte and wisecracking about how he wrote “Sorry,” instead of Justin Bieber, which left the swimmer’s rival, Michael Phelps, in stitches.

Rihanna rounded out the night with medleys of her soul, dancehall and R&B songs showcasing some of her best vocals. Her performances were raw, powerful, sexy, emotional, and definitely unapologetic. In other words, truly her.

The sweetest moment of the night, however, was when Drake in a sharp tuxedo presented her the Vanguard Award and reminisced about first meeting Robyn Rihanna Fenty in 2005 as an extra in her first music video as she beamed at his congratulatory speech.

We loved the woman who hasn’t changed since day one. She’s someone I loved since I was 22-years-old.”

Rihanna would go on to remark on how her award was so much bigger than herself.

My success started as my dream. But now my success is not my own. It’s my family’s. It’s my fans. It’s my country’s. It’s the Caribbean as a whole. It’s women. It’s black women.

When she finished her speech she walked off the stage with Drake hand in hand. It was truly a remarkable night for women indeed.

“Disabled” Model Represents Beyonce’s New Online Face

By Florentina Narchet

Modeling is for all people – modeling is diversity –as Jillian Mercado proves – a model who suffers muscular dystrophy becomes Beyonce’s new face to promote the artist’s products.

Mercado announced this news on her Instagram, “OK LADIES now let’s get in FORMATION!” she wrote on Instagram. “So BEYond excited to finally announce that I’m on the official @beyonce website!!!

Screen-Shot-2016-03-18-at-9.59.58-AM

The 28-year-old model was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy as a child. This condition is caused by a group of diseases causing progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass.

According to Mayo Clinic, “in muscular dystrophy abnormal genes (mutations) interfere with the production of proteins needed to form healthy muscle.” This disease mostly affects at a very early age and boys are more likely to be diagnosed with it. Muscular dystrophy has no cure; however, medications can treat it.

Social media and her personal blog Manufactured 1987 has been a tool for Mercado to surf in the modeling industry.

Mercado did not think that people with any physical disability were a “disable” fit into many industries, especially the modeling industry.

According to The Guardian, on an interview with Vogue Mercado expressed how from her point of view society treats these cases, “I wasn’t sure about showing everyone my world because I didn’t know if there would be an audience. We’ve been brainwashed [as a society] not to care about someone who has a disability, or their world.”

Although she is the first model with physical disability, her story has inspired others that being in a wheelchair is not an excuse to be forgotten or to even seen incapable within society.

‘“I was shocked that I didn’t see anyone in the industry that was like me,”’ Mercado told Vogue. ‘“So when people, especially girls, tell me that I’m their role model, I am taken aback. I love it and it is flattering but it affects me on a very personal level because I remember growing up without having a person I could look to,”’ she added.

On Beyoncé’s online store, Mercado can be seen wearing Beyoncé merchandise: she appears wearing a “hot sauce” cap, an “I twirl on them haters”, and “Smack it, smack it, smack it smack it” sweaters.

Also, Mercado has participated in campaigns for Diesel Jeans and Nordstrom.

GYMNAST SOPHINA DEJESUS MAY HAVE JUST REINVENTED THE SPORT

BXULHTGQTZSAFFV.20130620182132

It happened on the day before Super Bowl Sunday at Pauley Pavilion in UCLA. A senior gymnast who shares an Puerto Rican/African-American heritage, channeled her inner Beyonce by incorporating a series of trending internet dances to spice up her floor exercise routine.

Gymnastics has, like figure skating displayed athleticism and grace and while pleasing to the eye has degenerated into a contest of who can duplicate repetitive forms best. Sophina changed this and may have ushered in a new dimension to the sport.

DeJesus showed a powerful grasp of all the tumbling sets we have seen often but at each stop juncture, Sophina added the Quan, the Whip/Nae-Nae, and closed out her first floor exercise of the season with the Dab causing an unrestrained response from teammates and the fans in attendance.

And did we mention she nearly scored a ten, settling for a 9.925 score. But as she was crushed virally by a collective love of internet activity, Sophina, a sociology major who calls Temecula, California home seemed not so moved by the judges refusal to acknowledge perfection.

“It is a subjective sport, so it doesn’t hurt,”

said Samantha Peszek, former teammate and Olympic Silver medalist.

Even though traditionalists will hold to the tried and true floor styles, a revolution, a blend of entertainment and sport appears to have caught the imagination of the masses. Helped by her sister, Savannah, “an awesome dancer” in her own right, Sophina wanted to display something different, something lasting.

“I wanted to end my senior year with a bang.”

That loud noise you just heard in the pavilion was confirmation that something new in the sport of Gymnastics just went off. Look below to see the performance that went viral.

Is Beyonce and Jay-Z’s Marriage In Trouble?

1389099266_ag012420_24_beyonce-jay-z-blue-ivy-560

Beyonce and Jay-Z were all hugs and kisses during their Wednesday night concert in Seattle. Ever since TMZ released the video of Solange attacking Jay-Z after the MET Ball rumors began to fly that were are over, split, broken-up, or divorced. This display of affection seemed to prove otherwise.

Beyonce stated to Hollywood Life that she does not want a divorce, she’s very against it on principal. That’s why they waited so long to get married — she wanted to be a hundred percent sure. Jay and Beyonce also agreed that they would never put their daughter, Blue Ivy through a divorce. It’s been a hard couple of months, but who doesn’t have problems in their relationships?

I’m really happy to know that Beyonce and Jay Z are putting what’s most important to them a priority — their Blue Ivy

Do you think this is real or a publicity stunt? Does this dynamic duo really need the press? Can this be a mere plot to sell tickets for the “On The Run” Tour? Share your thoughts.

We definitely felt the heat when the blazzin’ couple of Jay-Z and Beyonce brought “On The Run” to the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

This dynamic duo opened with their 2002 hit single: “03 Bonnie And Clyde,” before going into their solo acts.
With their creative collaborations as powerful performers on stage and true partners in life, there was no way they were on the run with the thousands of fans mesmerized by their performance.

Their passion was on full display as they romanced through this “On The Run Tour” concert.
Jay-Z had much to say with “Public Service Announcement” and “Dirt Off Your Shoulder,” while Beyoncewas being a “Naughty Girl” and sang “Run The World.”

And as the fairytale ended they came back together for “Drunk in love.”

Beyonce Pulled Off Stage By Fan In Sao Paulo

68215_1

Beyonce was nearly pulled off stage Sunday by an overzealous fan while performing at the Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The fan grabbed onto the 32-year-old singer and pulled her off stage during a performance of “Irreplaceable.”

Apparently the shirtless crazed fan jumped on stage, wrapped his arms around the former Destiny’s Child member and pulled her into the crowd. Security personnel helped Beyonce back up on stage and she finished the song as if nothing happened!

As security was throwing him out Bey allowed the man to see the rest of her performance and told security “It’s okay.” After the song the superstar greeted the fan who almost hurt her by asking his name and told him “Nice to meet you. Thank you, I love you, too.”

This isn’t the first incident that has occurred on the “Mrs. Carter Show” world tour. In Copenhagen in May, also while performing “Irreplaceable,” a fan reached out and smacked the singer on her backside.

The tour continues in Brazil on Tuesday then to Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico.

@Beyonce Allegedly Pregnant With Second Child

Beyonce

Rumors have been confirmed to E! News that Beyonce and husband Jay-Z are expecting their second child. Pregnancy rumors began flying when the 31-year-old singer walked the red carpet at the Met Gala earlier this month wearing a custom-made Givenchy gown that camouflaged her stomach. Rumors went into overdrive when she canceled a performance in Antwerp, Belgium, part of her global “Mrs. Carter World Tour,” citing “dehydration and exhaustion.”

Mrs. Carter has hinted at expanding the Carter family stating on Good Morning America “I would like more children. I think my daughter needs some company.” The 31-year-old has a 15-month-old daughter with Jay, Blue Ivy. Bey and hubby Jay have not confirmed rumors so we will just have to wait and see!

@Pitbull Song “Open Letter” Supports Jay-Z/Beyonce’s Cuba Trip

Pitbull & Jay-Z

Pitbull released his own freestyle of Jay-Z’s “Open Letter”, which addressed the heavy criticism the couple received for traveling to Pitbull’s native Cuba which the U.S. enforces strong economic sanctions. An investigation was even reported into whether Jay and Beyonce had proper travel clearance U.S. Treasury officials later confirmed that the trip was licensed as an educational exchange. In his new freestyle, Pitbull has offered his support to the couple who celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary on their recent trip.

Jay fired back last week with a new song titled “Open Letter” with rhymes such as “Boy from the hood, I got White House clearance… Politicians never did s— for me except lie to me, distort history… They wanna give me jail time and a fine. Fine, let me commit a real crime.”

Pitbull talks about Cuba-U.S. relations, Cuban politics and made reference to the Mariel boatlift, which brought many Cuban immigrants to the USA in 1980, and the 1983 film Scarface, whose opening scenes showed footage from the event. He also references Elian Gonzalez, the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis. “Born in Miami, right on time/ Scarface, El Mariel Cuban crime.” He goes on to say “It’s the freedom that we ride for/ It’s the freedom that we die for/ C-U-B-A/ Hope to see you free one day.” He specifically addresses the Jay and Bey in his last verse: “Question of the night/ Would they have messed with Mr. Carter if he was white?/Happy fifth-year anniversary, Jay and B, don’t worry it’s on me.”
