Unlike some states like Texas and Utah, whose official state snacks are tortilla chips, salsa and Jell-O, respectively, New York’s official state snack, yogurt, is healthy, nutritious and yummy.
Last Wednesday Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill making yogurt the official state snack. According to Cuomo’s administration New York produces more yogurt than any state in the nation. But if you are lactose intolerant, that’s ok, New York also included non-dairy ingredients such as soy and coconut milk to the yogurt family.
So here are three fun facts on why yogurt is a great healthy snack for New Yorkers and everyone else:
You should already know that the milky smooth cream is full of proteins, which will help muscles repair themselves faster after a good workout. But the great benefit many don’t know is that yogurt helps prevent high blood pressure. People who eat yogurt, compared to those that don’t, are 50% less likely to have high blood pressure according to a study conducted in the Harvard School of Public Health.
Now that the temperatures are dropping (yes it’s brisk outside) you have to be careful and not catch a cold. According to Alexa Meyer, PhD, at the University of Vienna, four ounces of yogurt per day may help you save your sick days for more important reasons like hangovers and lazy days.
It was great popping Flintstone vitamins every morning when we were like seven-years-old, but now as adults we need something stronger to satisfy our body’s daily needs. One serving of yogurt is known to have an abundance of vitamin B5, potassium and zinc to name a few.
Combining fruits or nuts (or both) to yogurt will increase the tastiness and health benefits. So what are your favorite yogurts and what do you mix it with? Comment below on LatinTrends.
