The newly established MLS franchise in New York known as New York City Football Club, after a draw in their opener down in Orlando, will be making their debut in Yankee Stadium this Sunday March 15th. The game has a lot going for it. Debuts always are a curious bit. We have a Yankee player hating on sharing his turf with said soccer team. The New York- Boston rivalry is always a natural. A threat of teammate revenge for a twitter pic just adds more flavor to Major League Soccer’ first game on New York soil and is a prime example of how powerful the New York media is.
David Villa, of Spain, former World Cup and European champion, already has made an impact, assisting on the goal that stands historically as the first goal in franchise history in their road opener. David is in a party mode for this game and is enjoying more historical firsts.
“We’re facing this game with excitement. It’s going to be a big party for the city, a big party for the club,’’
said Villa.
“This is completely different from all the experiences I’ve had in the past. We’re starting from scratch here.’’
One person who is not looking forward to it is New York Yankee first baseman Mark Teixeira, who made his feelings known about how the grounds will become sharing the field with a soccer team this year.
“It’s going to suck, but you have to deal with it. It’s going to tear up the infield, but there’s nothing we can do about it, so we’ll deal with it.”
Yankee president Randy Levine however discounted any issues with the field for both teams.
“The field will be fine for both sports.”
But only in New York can a twitter pic make news. On the flight David Villa showed his humorous side as he took a pic of him and teammate Sebastian Velasquez, open mouthed in deep sleep. Velasquez has promised revenge. It can only be another interesting chapter in New York soccer as the eyes of New York and the World will be on “Soccer in the City.
