There has to be easier ways to make a million dollars. But Nate Diaz overcame a few obstacles himself to set up the upset victory over Conor McGregor at UFC 196 in the MGM Grand Garden Arena. In the process, Nate hit the lottery by doubling his listed purse.
Diaz, who after the fight mentioned that he had been sick for a week when he got the call used it to his advantage. The lost weight would inspire him to train to make the fight weight despite the late offer which left him ten days to get ready.
Diaz also would see his face marked and bloodied as he took McGregor’s best shots in the opening round. Conor seemed desperate after that as he gassed out in the second, tapping out to a rear chin lock. Nate took a desperate barrage from Conor in the first round that marked him heavily and busted him open. But being the bigger man, two full weight classes above McGregor’s, he absorbed everything Conor could throw and forced McGregor to tap out to a rear chin choke in the second.
Dana White was interviewed afterwards and implied that Diaz made more than the $500,000 purse that was reported this past Saturday night and intimated that Diaz may not return.
“Nate Diaz made a lot of money, he made millions of dollars so, we’ll see what happens,”
Dana proclaimed.
Nate Diaz suddenly can call his shots now. If he made as much as reported he can pick and choose whether its a re-match which would be quite lucrative but not a smart move for McGregor, the UFC Featherweight champ, who earned a million dollar purse but over-reached way above his division to get it. Or he can try for the UFC Welterweight title or as Dana White heard rumored that Diaz is buying a yacht with his winnings.
