McDonald’s NY Metro concluded its month-long Hispanic Heritage Month festivity “Celebrando Nuestras Leyendas,” its annual initiative launched in mid-September celebrating iconic Latino cultural legends. In its inaugural year, “Celebrando Nuestras Leyendas” honored the legendary Celia Cruz, undeniably, one of the best-known and most influential female figures in the history of Latino music. As the grand finale to this program, McDonald’s partnered with AT&T, La Mega 97.9 and La Nueva 93.1 Amor to host a live music show at Latin Quarters Nightclub in New York City to benefit the Celia Cruz Foundation.
La Reina de la Salsa’s tremendous musical legacy was brought to life through the performance of her greatest hits by a number of established and upcoming artists that captured Celia’s essence, musical style and sabor, for the delight and enjoyment of the audience. Celebrating the Queen were: N’Klabe, who was #1 on this week’s Billboard’s Tropical Airplay chart; Azuquita, with her show-stopping imitation of Celia; and the great Jose Alberto “El Canario,” who interpreted some of his dear friend’s greatest hits with his unique voice and style.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, McDonald’s NY Metro highlighted its Hispanic customers’ heritage and culture by engaging its guests in a series of fun and surprising interactive digital components at its restaurants and website. One of these elements was an in-store trayliner showcasing two original Celia Cruz renditions created especially for the program by legendary fashion illustrator Alvaro. Throughout the month, guests were able to vote for their favorite Celia portrait on the McDNYTriState website. The winning illustration was unveiled at the music event by the artist Alvaro himself and later auctioned off with all benefits going to The Celia Cruz Foundation. In addition, attendees were asked to contribute $15.00 to the foundation.
“McDonald’s is delighted to celebrate the diversity and heritage of our Hispanic guests as well as the contributions that Latino legendary figures make to the cultural fiber of our society through ‘Celebrando Nuestras Leyendas.’ We are happy to have joined forces with AT&T and SBS Radio to honor such an extraordinary trajectory as Celia Cruz’s,” stated Jessica Meléndez, McDonald’s Regional Marketing Manager for the New York Metro Region.
For La Mega and 93.1, as leading Hispanic FM stations and as the voice of this community, it is a great honor to have joined McDonald’s and AT&T in this groundbreaking celebration of our Latino listeners’ cultural heritage,” said Polito Vega, Vice-president of Programming, SBS NY- WSKQ-FM La Mega 97.9 & WPAT-FM 93.1 Amor. “Celia is the true reina of Latin music. This show was a well-deserved celebration of her legacy and it reflected the impact Celia’s music still has in both Latino and non-Latino culture,” added radio legend, Polito Vega who recently celebrated more than 50 years in radio with a concert attended by over 46,000 people.
Each year, McDonald’s “Celebrando Nuestras Leyendas” will celebrate their valued Hispanic customers’ community and culture during Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting the career and contributions of a different Latino cultural icon. The great success of the inaugural edition of this month-long rumba lays the ground for many more celebrations to come.
