The biopic on Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar is about to get its best treatment on screen. Javier Bardem will join forces with Penelope Cruz to tell the story of Escobar Due to come out in 2016. The screenplay will be based on Virginia Vallejo’s memoir “Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar.”
Vallejo was a journalist who was granted asylum in return for the work exposing corruption in the Colombian government and their connection to cartels which threatened her life. Escobar, known as the “King of Cocaine” made excess of three billion with that product yet was seen as an anti hero.
The film, directed by Familia’s Fernando Leon de Aranos will focus on Pablo’s rise to prominence and his relationship with Vallejo. Escobar was killed in 1993 in a shootout with Police at the age of 44.
