In order to commemorate the 2014 FIFA World Cup and one of its noticeable celebrities, GOOGLE has changed its logo to a doodle which pays homage to the departed Pulpo Paul, also known as the “psychic” Octopus who has been known for predicting the winners of the soccer matches.
Paul the Octopus hatched from an egg back in 2008 in Weymouth, England. Eventually, Pulpo Paul would then be moved to the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany where he would grab the world’s attention.
During the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament, Pulpo Paul became a name among the soccer world after his handlers presented him with two clear boxes that contained the same meal of food (either boxes would contain a piece of a mussel or an oyster). Attached to each box was the flag of Germany and the flag of Germany’s opponent. Whichever box that Pulpo Paul opened to fetch his meal would be predicted as the winner.
Pulpo Paul was usually right and thus nicknamed the psychic octopus.
Aside from making predications regarding Germany, Pulpo Paul also made predications about other teams. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Pulpo Paul became even more popular when he predicted the win for Spain against their match with The Netherlands to win The World Cup itself.
Sadly, the 2010 FIFA World Cup would be Pulpo Paul last soccer match predication since the psychic octopus passed away in October 2010 after a two-and-half year lifespan, a common age for those of his species.
Although gone, he is not forgotten about in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
In yesterday’s match between Belgium and Algeria, GOOGLE dedicated a tribute doodle to Pulpo Paul by depicting Pulpo Paul sitting upon a bed of clouds in the afterlife with a halo above his head with two boxes positioned at his sides.
To the right of Pulpo Paul was a box bearing the Belgian flag and to his left was the Algerian flag seemingly showing Pulpo Paul making one last predication.
Belgium ending up winning their match against Algeria scoring 2 to 1.
And it seems that Pulpo Paul will not be departing from making his heavenly predications on GOOGLE since he still sits there upon the site with the flags of other countries who are playing. So, even though Pulpo Paul could not be here to make the predication, Pulpo Paul still stands as the animal oracle of the FIFA World Cup.
