We will be having another boxing star event in Houston tomorrow night, a day before Mother’s Day. It fits because Canelo Alvarez–James Kirkland is expected to be a whale of a fight. Two mother’s sons with knockout fists will clash in Minute Maid Park.
“As a promoter, you want to work with fighters that want to go against the very best. That is what is so exciting for me about promoting this event because that’s what we’ll have on May 9. The best fighting the best.”
Golden Boy promotions founder and President Oscar de la Hoya proudly announced.
Canelo (44-1-1, 31 KO’s) who since his loss to Floyd Mayweather, his lone defeat, in 2013 has rebounded to score a stoppage of Alfredo Angulo and a split decision over Erislandy Lara. James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KO’S) has won five straight since his shocking first round Knockout loss to Nobuhiro Ishida with wins over Alfredo Angulo, Carlos Molina, and Glen Tapia to get this crossroads fight. Bernard Hopkins, Hall of Fame boxer and Golden Boy promotion partner explained what this fight symbolizes.
“Thank you everyone that participated in putting this event together. Right now, these fighters have a chance to be the ‘next big thing.’
Canelo, the Mexican redhead is excited about fighting on HBO and mentioned he is eyeing this contest as crucial and knows that this is a fight not expected to go the distance.
“It’s very easy to say words, but once we are in the ring, let’s let the fists do the talking.”
Canelo said.
Despite the controversy of Canelo’s last fight Oscar de la Hoya feels this one will cleanse the aftertaste of that fight.
“Some people weren’t too content with the May 2 performances but one thing is for sure: people are very excited to watch some action with Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland on May 9.
Oscar proclaimed.
James Kirkland saw this match fall through previously due to injury but is very well aware of the level of opponent he has before him.
“My training camp has been outstanding. Canelo brings a lot to the game; he has a great team backing him.”
Kirkland responded. Oscar is also expecting much from James tomorrow night.
“James is one of the most decorated punchers and fighters. He brings power, and he brings excitement to ring.”
Also involved is Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, the SMS Promotions Chairman and CEO, who has been heavily involved in the sport for a few years now. Starting as just a side interest, Jackson has now immersed himself in Boxing and on the verge of a major event like this is as pleased as he would be during a big concert.
“This is excitement. Originally, I was just passionate about boxing, I was just a fan, but now, to be a part of what could possibly be the biggest fight of the year, that is really exciting.
May the 9th promises great fireworks and will also include 50 Cent prospect Ryan Martin (12-0, 7 KOs). Also on the undercard we have Humberto “La Zorrita” Soto (65-8-2, 35 KOs), 2012 Olympian Joseph “Jojo” Diaz Jr. (15-0, 10 KOs), Chinese heavyweight sensation, Taishan (3-0, 2 KOs), KeAndre Gibson (12-0-1, 5 KOs), Joshua Clottey (38-4, 22 KOs), and James Leija Jr.
