In Telemundo’s latest novela “Aurora”, a traditional love story with a scientific
twist to the drama premiered back in November and gained quite a fan base. The story
is centered around title character Aurora Ponce de Leon (Sarah Maldonado), a
beautiful 20-year-old woman who falls in love with and eventually becomes pregnant
with the charming Lorenzo (Jorge Luis Pila). When her parents discover she is
pregnant, Aurora is sent away to have the baby. After having the baby, Aurora
becomes ill with an incurable disease which her father, Gustavo (Braulio Castillo),
a renowned physician and scientist in the field of cryogenics decides to freeze
until a cure can be found for the illness. The series then time jumps 20 years into
the future, when Aurora is unfrozen. Still a 20-year-old women, Aurora most cope
with the time differences and the changes that have occurred to the people she
loves.
A Korean soap opera broadcast on the KBS2 network entitled “Ice Girl” (She Returned
/ She Came Back / She Is Back / Love Lost in Time) was the inspiration for the
novela broadcast on Telemundo. In Ice Girl, a young woman named Kim So Ryung (Kim
Hyo Jin) suffers a heart attack and is moved to her father’s hospital where she was
frozen since he could not save her. After being frozen 25 years, she is revived but
cannot remember her fiancée Jung Ha Rok (Kim Joo Seung) but finds herself falling in
love with his son, Jung Min Jae (Kim Nam Jin).
Although many novellas tend to be adapted from other soap operas from across the
world, Aurora is a bit intriguing since the novela utilizes a science fiction theme
which isn’t exactly present within the genre since maybe novelas tend to stick to
the simple format viewed by audiences over the years. Although the show’s only true
scientific element involves the process of freezing someone to elongate their life,
Aurora has set the way for future novellas to further explore other genres.
Ice Girl aired back in 2005 and ran for a total of 16 episodes, meanwhile Aurora is
still running with a total of 180 episodes expected to air. Since its premiere the
show has brought in over 1.3 million viewers, maybe Telemundo has stumbled across a
new gem by taking risks and branching out story wise.
