After a successful opening night of Los Monólogos de la Vagina in New York City these grand actresses talked about how excited they are to be part of this amazing production.
Los Monólogos de la Vagina is the Spanish version of Eva Ensler’s infamous, The Vagina Monologues based on interviews with a diverse group of women—from a Long Island antique dealer to a Bosnian refugee—Los Monólogos de la Vagina boldly explores the humor, power, pain, wisdom, outrage, mystery and excitement hidden in vaginas.
Mexico’s Dame, the great Angélica Maria arrived immediately after the show in an elegant black-jacketed dress accessorized in gold and ivory stones while still having on her stylish glasses and meet with reporters.
“This is a dream come true to be performing it in the heart of New York doing these monologues Spanish and working with these excellent woman, (referring to her daughter, Angélica Vale and Kate Del Castillo) makes my jaw drop!” said Angélica Maria
These monologues seem so personal and intimate how did you prepare?
“These are not our stories, we are reading other woman’s stories, we are each just adding our own element to it when we read them in font of a live and intimate audience, every actress who does a monologue brings their own flare to it” said Angélica Maria
There is some heavy adult language was that difficult to project to a live audience?
“The monologues do contain some ‘dirty’ language, however it’s a homage to woman and an education for all people about woman, people should not get caught up in the, ‘oh may she said that, she went there’, forget that, these monologues are so magnificent, you have to forget those things, let go of your traumas, forget the taboos, forget all those things, come give yourself to it and enjoy.” responded Angélica Maria
The glowing and pregnant Angélica Vale also chimed in adding:
“I mean we like to talk about our vaginas in private, sometimes a magazine, [she says jokingly], It’s something that no one really asks us as woman so when you start talking about this openly with the audience people start to open up and liberate themselves. I think this is something that has never been talked about so directly and boldly, audience members scream from the emotion.”
When asked about her husband seeing the play Angélica Vale says, “He felt fine, he really enjoyed it and laughed a lot, at times I caught him hiding his face.”
Kate del Castillo looking stunning in a tight red leather dress said, “Honestly this is really a liberation for people who come to the show, they scream from the emotion and what better place than NYC to do it where you have everything where you have people from all over the world.”
She goes on to say, “More than anything Los Monólogos de la Vagina informed me that there is the large lack of information about woman issues, this play entertains while informs, particularly about the lack of love that can exist out in the world, as actresses, as woman, we couldn’t be happier to be part of this, its an honor really.”
We also has a chance to speak with the original writer of the english version of The Vagina Monologues, Eva Ensler.
How did you feel about the legenday Mexican producers, Morris Gilbert y Federico González Compeán bringing this production of Los Monólogos de la Vagina to NY in Spanish with such an amazing cast?
“I am so emotional, to see this production back in New York and in Spanish is exactly what this play is all about, to be owned by the Latino community, to be voicing and having woman in the Latino community speaking for woman, it’s a dream come true.” said Ensler
