Seny Taveras is first and foremost a Dominican Woman from Washington Heights, New York and a Bronx resident. She is intelligent and she is beautiful, but, most importantly, she is a public servant.
Indeed, Ms. Taveras has dedicated nearly all of her adult life to public service.
Currently, Ms. Taveras serves as, Executive Director of CUNY In The Heights, Hostos Community College, Department of Continuing Education and workforce Development and Oversees a broad range of fiscal and program responsibilities for Continuing Education and related external programs. Provides leadership for the development and implementation of new programs of study and ensures the coordination and implementation of program components. Plans, markets and implements College programs in Continuing Education, developing overall programs and overseeing development of content, budgets, and marketing strategies. Develops funding proposals; solicits grant information and provides leadership and guidance in partnering with community and governmental agencies. Provide fiscal oversight and evaluation; develops strategic and operating plans; reports progress and results to management. Oversees a comprehensive marketing and public information program. Manages staff of the Continuing Education office. Represents Continuing Education within the College community and externally.
Ms. Taveras served as Chief of the Staff to Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez (district 10) in Manhattan. In that capacity she is charged with the entire operation of his office. Ms. Taveras managed budget, legislation and day to day operations.
Ms. Taveras entered the private sector serving as Chief of the Staff for DAP Strategies, LLC, a consulting company that advises on international business and political consulting, where she was responsible for strategic planning for a sector of the companies international portfolio. Ms. Taveras returned to work in the public sector this October when she accepted the position of Chief of Staff for NYC Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez.
Under the administration of Governor David A. Paterson she worked as Special Assistant to New York State Deputy Secretary Denise O’Donnell, Public Safety and Homeland Security. In that capacity she influenced policies and operations for the state’s homeland security, emergency preparedness, and criminal justice agencies. Ms. Taveras’ influence also extended over the Division of Criminal Justice Services, the Office of Homeland Security, the Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives, the Division of Military and Naval Affairs, the State Emergency Management Office, the Crimes Victim Board, The Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, and the State Commission of Correction.
Prior to ascending to the special assistant position, Ms. Taveras served Senior Policy Advisor to Lieutenant Governor David A. Paterson and Special Counsel for New York State Senator David A. Paterson. While serving in the Hon. David Paterson’s inner circle Ms. Taveras influenced many of the projects that affected the senator’s community of Harlem and its surrounding neighborhoods.
Ms. Taveras ability to stay in touch with and give back to the community is demonstrated in all areas of her life. Ms. Taveras serves on the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Pre-Law Institute Advisory Board. The Institute helps prepare students for the LSAT and enter into Law School. Ms. Taveras also served as Adjunct Professor at Hostos Community College. There, in addition to teaching practical skills, she served as role model and inspiration for the next generation of professionals. Throughout her career, Seny Taveras has demonstrated a unique ability to stay in touch with and give back to the community. This sentiment is evident as early as her college days.
Ms. Taveras attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in legal studies. During her years at John Jay she was president of the Dominican Students’ Association and was a representative in Student Government.
At Hofstra University School of Law, where she graduated from in 2003, she, once again, excelled in community activism. She was president of the Latino Law Student Association, and she worked at the Hofstra University Housing Clinic, where she provided free legal services to poor, Latino, tenants. Prior to graduation from Hofstra, she studied abroad in Sydney, Australia exploring International Human Rights Law and Critical Race Theory.
In her professional career Seny Taveras has been a public servant through and through. She has worked for the New York City Human Resources Administration, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, the Nassau County Executive’s Office of Department of Economic Development. All along the way Seny Taveras has demonstrated her commitment to helping people and a desire to give back to her community.
Ms. Taveras work has not gone unnoticed. Ms. Taveras was appointed by Governor David A. Paterson to the New York State Domestic Violence Advisory Board. She received the community Service Award from the City of New York Office of the Comptroller, NYC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Dominican Women Development Center Community Service Award. And, she was honored by El Centro Civico Cultural Dominicano, joining a highly distinguished and accomplished group of women recognized for their achievements and contributions to the Dominican community.
